If we don't hear from you, best of luck with your project. But before you go, here are some things you can do on your own to protect yourself.
Speak to a minimum of 3 references. Before you contact them, make a list of questions you want to ask.
If a company has 10 reviews all done at the same time you should be cautious. If reviews lack detail it's cause for concern.
Stable businesses usually don't require a deposit. If you pay upfront, you need to find a way to protect yourself.
Ask and document what happens if the Contractor does not do the work per the schedule.
Ask and document whether or not the company will take on more clients. If they do this, what happens with your project.
Construction law can be complicated. Contact a lawyer and pay the small fee to review the agreements before you sign anything.
The "BAD CONTRACTOR" stories are not difficult to find. Just ask a few people and you are likely to hear a few horror stories. There are so many "BAD CONTRACTORS" in the industry that there are now numerous reality TV shows about those nightmare home renovations that have gone terribly wrong.
We started this business after losing over $500,000 because we chose a bad Contractor. We ended up having to take legal action after the Contractor we hired stopped working. The project was already more than 6 months behind, and after learning about major safety, quality and contractual issues, we not only had losses from the money we had already paid, but had to pay several hundred thousand dollars to fix the work that had been done.
During civil litigation, we learnt that the Contractor we hired had used most of the money we gave them to fund other businesses and to pay off huge debt that was unrelated to our project. We learnt he had lied about his experience, education and the type of business he had.
As we told our story to others, we learnt that this was not uncommon and that many other Homeowners had similar stories.
Jobs not fully completed, jobs taking much longer than was promised, dangerous and unsafe construction, missing permits, third party liens, loss of life savings, family stress, and fraud are just few of the stories we heard.
There are many ways to learn about the company you want to hire. There is lots of social media on the internet, however, it is sometimes difficult for social media platforms to truly monitor and validate online reviews or confirm company information.
There are a lot of great Contractors out there. In fact, we hired many of them to complete our house. We started this business because we learnt how to "fact check" and research companies operating in the home improvement industry.
Let us help you avoid making the same mistakes we made....
